Vaginitis is an inflammatory condition that affects your vagina and causes symptoms such as thick, foul-smelling discharge, painful intercourse, and vaginal pain and itching. You can develop vaginitis at any age, but our medical professionals diagnose it most frequently in women in their reproductive years. The most common types of vaginitis are: • Bacterial vaginosis This results from an overgrowth of the bacteria naturally found in your vagina, which upsets the natural balance. • Yeast infections. These are usually caused by a naturally occurring fungus called Candida albicans. • Trichomoniasis This is caused by a parasite and is often sexually transmitted. Symptoms Vaginitis signs and symptoms can include: • Change in color, odor or amount of discharge from your vagina • Vaginal itching or irritation • Pain during sex • Painful urination • Light vaginal bleeding or spotting If you have vaginal discharge, the characteristics of the discharge might indicate the type of vaginitis you have. Both common colds and flu are caused by viruses, and both are respiratory infections. Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. Special tests can tell if a person is sick with flu. What are the symptoms of flu versus the symptoms of a cold? The symptoms of flu can include fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue (tiredness). Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems. The following symptoms can be present in flu, but generally aren't present in a cold: • Running a fever (temperature of 100.4ºF or higher) • Severe muscle aches • Severe fatigue • Nausea and vomiting • Diarrhea and/or stomach pains The other difference between the two is longevity. While colds might only last for a few days, up to a week or so in the majority of cases, flu symptoms can be present for up to two weeks.   The terms "skin condition" and "skin disorder" are used interchangeably to describe various skin problems, from small red bumps on the skin to widespread rashes. Some skin conditions can be unsightly but harmless, while others may be contagious. Many skin conditions are also itchy or painful. Any change in the color, texture of appearance of the skin is, more often than not, a sign of a skin condition. Common examples include: • Itching • Flaking • Blistering • Redness • Swelling • Growths If any of these symptoms appear, without explanation, and persist for more than a few days, speak to a doctor. Which are contagious? All of the following conditions are contagious, the only difference between them is that some happen to be more common in adults than children, and vice versa: • Shingles • Herpes • Yeast infection • Thrush • Scabies • Ringworm • Impetigo Acne Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that's hot or painful to touch.   Infection is the invasion and growth of germs in the body. The germs may be bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi, or other microorganisms. What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)? UTIs are common infections that happen when bacteria, often from the skin or rectum, enter the urethra, and infect the urinary tract. The infections can affect several parts of the urinary tract, but the most common type is a bladder infection (cystitis). Genital herpes is an STD caused by two types of viruses – herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). How do I know if I have genital herpes? Most people with genital herpes have no symptoms or have very mild symptoms. Mild symptoms may go unnoticed or be mistaken for other skin conditions like a pimple or ingrown hair. Because of this, most people do not know they have a herpes infection. Herpes sores usually appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. This is known as having an “outbreak”. The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take a week or more to heal. Flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, body aches, or swollen glands) also may occur during the first outbreak. People who experience an initial outbreak of herpes can have repeated outbreaks, especially if they have HSV-2. However, repeat outbreaks are usually shorter and less severe than the first outbreak. Although genital herpes is a lifelong infection, the number of outbreaks may decrease over time. STD symptoms can include an unusual sore, a smelly genital discharge, burning when peeing, or bleeding between periods (if you have a menstrual cycle). Trichomoniasis: A sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Trichomoniasis is among the most common sexually transmitted infections. Risk factors include multiple sexual partners and not using condoms during sex. Trichomoniasis causes a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching, and painful urination in women. Men typically have no symptoms. Complications include a risk of premature delivery for pregnant women. Treatment involves both partners taking one large dose of a certain oral antibiotic. Chlamydia: A common sexually transmitted infection that may not cause symptoms. Chlamydia affects people of all ages but is most common in young women. Many who have chlamydia don't develop symptoms, but they can still infect others through sexual contact. Symptoms may include genital pain and discharge from the vagina or penis. Antibiotic therapy for the affected patient and the patient's sexual partners is recommended. Screening for other common sexually transmitted infections should also be performed.
